COLOSSUS:CURRENT
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ON THE THEME OF WATER:
POETRY, PROSE, VISUAL ART
The theme for the upcoming Colossus anthology is Water, and we are honored to be working with guest editor, Kim Shuck, former Poet Laureate of San Francisco!
This issue is focused on water scarcity, water justice, sea level rise, in other words: all issues related to water. For citizens of the United States it’s possible to become buffered in our understanding of water issues. Right now, internationally, there is serious water scarcity in some places, over abundance in other places, and toxicity all over. Billions of people get sick and die annually because of waterborne diseases that we’ve understood since the 1800s. We hear about sea level rise and we hear about drought. At the time of this writing, news agencies are broadcasting images of people wading around in floodwater. Water is essential to life and is a resource we need to treat with a respect that is often lacking.
Funds raised from sales of this anthology will go to support Wholly H2O, a bay area based nonprofit that offers educational activities that inspire environmental stewardship by forging personal connections with local watersheds. Their educational programs are tailored to enliven curiosity, knowledge, stewardship for California watersheds. Wholly H2O engages people directly in community science, watershed tours, and art. These full-bodied activities grow connections to watersheds that influence peoples’ choices and outcomes.
